Swanson Sharks! As always, I had intentions of getting this information out MUCH sooner; life has been awesome but insanely hectic! Along with getting married (!), buying a new car, I was granted the opportunity to take over the club swim team that I coach for – Michiana Stars – and have been learning the ins and outs of running a business. I switched back to teaching English this year at Riley High School with a new grade level (Seniors) and 190 (190!) total students. It’s been a busy year, but I am ecstatic for the summer season and can’t wait to get back to the pool with our Sharks! I will try to keep things as succinct as possible. The “Big” stuff: • Registration: o $80 per swimmer, each swimmer after the third swims free! You can pay online (swansonhighlandspool.com), or in person with cash or check (made out to Swanson Pool). Includes team t-shirt and team cap. o I will be at the pool Saturday, May 27 with physical copies of the forms and MAPSC waivers from 11:00am – 2:00pm. Forms will also be left at the pool all weekend and next week. o JustAddH20 will have a suit sizing kit at the pool over the weekend as well. We have a relatively simple team suit, however it is not required at practices or meets. The only other required equipment is a pair of goggles. Fins are recommended, but not required. Let me know if you have questions about equipment. • Requirements:Must be able to swim* one length of the pool. (*doggy paddle and its infinite variations are copacetic, but touching the bottom/side/lane-lines are not) Please talk to me if you are unsure! This isn’t exactly a hard rule, but a definite safety precaution. Swanson offers swim lessons, and we will do whatever we can to include beginning swimmers. Some kids only need a few days, some need a few weeks, but if a swimmer wants to be a member of the team, then they will be a member of the team! • First Practice: Thursday, June 8th. o WE ARE MOVING PRACTICES BACK ONE HOUR THIS SUMMER. 10 & Under swimmers will practice 9 – 10:00am, 11 & Overs from 10 – 11:00am. I understand that this may cause some scheduling issues, and I apologize for the late change if it negatively affects your schedule. The reasoning behind the change is twofold. First, we have always had issues with the temperatures not being quite as warm as we’d like in the early morning, and we want to give the sun some extra time to warm things up. Second, I am coaching our High School, Senior, and High Performance groups with Stars and much of our training depends on long course availability at Merrifield, which is 6 – 8:30am, so the extra time will allow me to get to Swanson on time. • Meets: o I am in the process of updating the meet commitment form and will have that at the pool and sent out through email by the end of the weekend. For general planning, meets typically start at 8am and end around noon. Our first meet will be Wednesday, June 14. • COACHES:(more in-depth bios to follow) o Danny Lucero-Dixon o Heather Dixon o Colin Lucero-Dixon o Alexis Jozwiak o Bruce Quick o Special Guest: Seamus Lucero-Dixon! • For any families who are new to swimming or are not currently part of a USA Swimming club team: o The year-round swim team that I coach for, Michiana Stars, is offering a chance for swimmers to get their feet wet (sorry for the pun) before Swanson opens up for the summer. Through the rest of May, swimmers and families are invited to join us at practices for FREE! The summer season is tragically ephemeral, and this is a great opportunity to get some extra practice, make some new friends, and get excited for Sharks! Stars practices in the evenings at Adams High School (intersection of Twyckenham and Mishawaka Ave.), typically from 5:30-7:30pm, depending on age/skill. Check outmichianastars.com to see practice times, shoot me an email, or feel free to drop in. (our team parents are awesome and will show you the ropes!) o The primary purpose of the MAPSC league is to grow our sport. I have a great relationship with coaches from all of our local swim teams, and we are lucky to have a good chunk of Swanson Sharks who represent those teams. I am happy to answer any questions I can, or to put you in contact with the right people!
• There is plenty more information that I need to get sent out, but this hopefully covers the basics. I hope you are as excited about the summer season as I am! I truly believe that swimming is the best sport in the world, and an absolutely invaluable skill to have. I love coaching and am extraordinarily grateful to be part of such an amazing team! Go Sharks! As always, please feel free to contact me at any time. Danny Lucero-Dixon email@example.com // firstname.lastname@example.org 574 – 286 - 5569
